After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Public Administration, at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, Walter attended the University of Nebraska--College of Law in Lincoln, Nebraska, graduating with a Juris Doctorate in 1994. Admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar in the fall of 1994, he began working as a criminal defense attorney at Raymond Law Office in Milwaukee. In 2009 he left to open his own practice and in 2017 opened a second location in Watertown, WI. He is a member of the Wisconsin State Bar and the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
