MoMick Varner wandered into Telluride in the fall of 1975 with $200, possibly from a heist of his wife`s bank account in Steamboat Springs, in a beat-up pickup sporting a rusty stock rack. The Telluride population was around 700 then....miners, crazed 60`s expats from anyplace USA, and two or three viable women. Dogs slept on the centerline of Main Street. Not one stoplight was in Town (or anywhere in our San Miguel County...still isn`t)! Telluride was at the toddler stage of its new career. And me... Mick bought his first residential lots in Telluride `s Town Park in the spring of 1976. His Kansas City attorney-to-be in Telluride stopped me on the main drag, the only paved street. He said: "You got any money?" "No!" "Can you get some...$10 grand?" "My old man in St. Louis might send it to me..." He did...the launch begins. We traded the Park lots with the Town for lots next to Lone Tree Cemetery. My to-be-attorney, the RoadHawg, was then Town of Telluride Attorney...an insider trade. The lots doubled in about 5 minutes. . In June 1977 he bought, rehabbed, and developed a corner main street historic building. More St. Louis money...from cheeseburgers. He then rehabbed and operated that Missouri boys Memorial Bldg. cellar as a jazz/blues nightclub called Trinity Tavern... so he could lose his remaining brains.
