Matthew graduated cum laude from Florida International University College of Law. During his studies he gained invaluable experience working, interning or completing practical training at (1) Americans for Immigrant Justice (a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping noncitizens); (2) Carlos A. Costa Immigration and Human Rights Clinic (where he represented, under the supervision of his professor, several detained individuals); and (3) Krome Immigration Court (during which he helped the three judges to research legal issues and write decisions). While in law school, Matthew was awarded the Community and Public Service Excellence Award. Before becoming an attorney, Matthew worked as a Spanish teacher for 6 years at Independence High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, teaching every level of Spanish - from Spanish I to Advanced Placement Spanish Literature.
