Hector Chavana Jr grew up in Houston and attended schools in the Aldine School District. He attended the Honors College at the University of Houston, where he was active in an organization called MEChA. After college, he supported Comprehensive Immigration Reform and various community initiatives. He was a mortgage broker in the early 2000s and held an active real estate broker license. He has had an active insurance license since 2007. He is married and has three children. He graduated number three in his class from South Texas College of Law-Houston in 2017, and the state bar's consumer section has published his academic work.
