I had the good fortune to grow up in Sterling, CO. During the summers, I spent my time on a tractor or combine on my dad's dry land wheat farm, and in winters, I attended school. I graduated from Sterling High School in 1972, from Northeastern Junior College in 1974 and from the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley, in 1976.In 1977, I found a job in Lodgepole, NE, teaching American History and English to junior high students. After two years of teaching, I decided to seek a business education. I attended the American Graduate School of International Management, in Glendale, AZ, and received a master's degree in business, with an emphasis on international management, in 1980.Lacking a decent job prospect, I returned to Sterling in the fall of 1980. There, I worked days and studied accounting, taxes and investments at night. I passed all five parts of the CPA examination in 1988. For five years, I completed tax returns and audits.
