Tips for applying to jobs in design

Veronica C. | March 29, 2012

When you’re applying to premium entry level positions and internships in a creative field such as design – whether it’s for websites, fashion, media or interior décor – the basic rules of the hiring process are somewhat different. While you’ll still have to organize a resume, portfolio, professional references and a cover letter, these documents should have more artistic qualities than an application meant for a traditional business or finance position. Here are some tips to keep in mind when applying for jobs in design.

Establish your online presence
As you begin your job search, you should make sure your have established a well-rounded online presence as an extension of your resume and portfolio. In addition to social media outlets, consider setting up a personal website to exhibit your portfolio pieces – this is a great way to show employers your ambition, knowledge and talent all at once in a digital medium.

Creative cover letter
Unlike those applying to traditional corporate positions, your cover letter can benefit from displaying a creative edge. Rather than restate your resume in a straightforward way, you might want to share a personal experience or challenge that motivated you to want to become a designer. By putting a personal and artistic spin on your cover letter, you’ll reinforce your persona as an out-of-the-box thinker.
