Signs of a promising internship program

Veronica C. | July 20, 2012

With hundreds of thousands of new graduates entering the work force every year, finding the entry-level job of your dreams is becoming more competitive by the minute. In addition to a strong college transcript, employers want your resume to point to an ambitious and experienced worker. One of the ways you can do that is by seeking out internship programs. However, not all internships are created the same. Here are some tips to help you sort the best from the rest.

A sure sign of a promising internship program is the level of compensation offered. Any level of pay, even minimum wage, is becoming a rarity in today’s internship market. Even if the opportunity is unpaid, make sure the employer is willing to provide college credit.

Valuable work
As an intern, you should get used to the idea that you won’t be doing the most glamorous work imaginable. However, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t expect to gain some valuable professional experience from your employer. The internship program description should list assignments that are important to the company’s business along with other tasks like filing or updating spreadsheets.

Before signing onto any internship program, you should make sure that you will have a direct supervisor or intern coordinator who will be responsible for directing your experience. This person should also be someone you can rely upon to provide you with some networking connections and a professional recommendation for your future job search.
