Is it time to start looking for a new job?
If you just spent forever applying for premium entry level jobs and paid internships in the wake of college graduation, you might be looking forward to staying at your first job for as long as possible. Unfortunately, you may realize sooner or later that your new employer isn’t exactly a great fit for your career goals – especially in this volatile hiring market. While you shouldn’t immediately quit your job, here are three signs you might want to start looking for a better offer.
No room to grow
While you might not expect to earn a big raise or promotion right after you get hired, the ability to take on new responsibilities so you can advance your career is an important aspect of working for a company. If after six months or a year it seems like your employer isn’t interested in offering you that next step toward growing as a professional, it might be time to look for a company that values your contributions.
Office culture
Sometimes you can’t pin what’s bothering you about your company to a specific detail or inconsistency, it’s more about disagreeing with the atmosphere of your office. For instance, you may find that the employees are too uptight for you to enjoy your work, or they could be too relaxed to get anything done on time. You may want to find an office culture that’s a better fit for your personality.
Career direction
If you found yourself working for a company or organization that’s not in your desired field, this is another sign that you should reconsider your job search. While it’s nice to have a reliable paycheck coming in, you should also be working toward building the career you really want.
