Capitalizing on your internship opportunities

Veronica C. | July 23, 2012

In today’s competitive job market, you have to do whatever you can to stand out among the competition. With hundreds of thousands of college seniors graduating every year, your skill and education alone won’t be enough to secure that entry-level position you want – you need a diverse resume before you even receive your diploma.

College internships are a great way to demonstrate your drive and ambition well before you begin looking for your first job. If you’re unsure of where to begin looking for these types of experiences, look at some company websites within your intended field for information regarding internship opportunities. Your college’s career services department can also help provide you with some leads for credit-based professional programs.

Once you have secured a decent internship, you should begin looking for ways to extract valuable skills and networking contacts that can come in handy during your post-graduate career hunt. Meet with your supervisors regularly to develop a personal connection with the company or organization. Even if it’s just to check in and socialize, speaking with your intern coordinators and other higher-ups can help them put a face to your name and push you towards the top of the list for future entry-level job opportunities.
