2 Common Resume Mistakes To Avoid

Veronica C. | January 23, 2012

In today’s competitive job market, there are a number of factors that can make or break your chances of earning that entry-level position you’ve had your eye on. Recent college graduates often lack the experience to know which mistakes to avoid, but even business veterans can be unaware of changes in the digital career search process. Here are some common resume mistakes to avoid when applying to a new job.

Computer formatting issues
So you’ve spent hours fine tuning your resume and combing it for errors, and you’re fairly certain it’s application-ready. However, before you send out that resume for the first time, you may want to take it for a couple of test runs. Often, resume layouts can become skewed due to formatting errors on different computers. As a rule, save every application document as a .pdf file and send it to a friend and family member to test for problems.

Lack of keywords
Many hiring managers at large companies rely upon computer programs to initially review applications. These automated programs scan resumes looking for keywords that match those found in the posted job description referring to skill sets, experience levels, educational background and other factors. Make sure your resume’s keywords match up with the job listing for the greatest chance of success.
